ABOUT OUR NAME

The name has some history behind it

We think of it as our pen name. And we hope to carry it with the boldness and good humor of the storytellers who came before us.

In the 19th century, Artemus Ward was the name used by humor writer Charles Farrar Browne, who traveled the country as a lecturer and storyteller. He was a favorite author of President Abraham Lincoln, and his work deeply inspired Mark Twain, who dubbed Browne “America’s greatest humorist.”

More than 100 years earlier, the name belonged to Artemas Ward, a Revolutionary War general second-in-command to President George Washington. He's also the namesake of Ward Circle in Washington, D.C. — this agency’s hometown.
